Tragedy and wonder. Sometimes even the most pervasive of them can come hand in hand.
On their way home to Denver, Neil and Sherry never expected their flight to be diverted. They never expected the entire world to change beneath them and around them. But most of all, most important of all, they never expected everything they’d ever believed about themselves to change. So when the unthinkable happens, they’re completely unprepared for the swelter of passion that follows.
“Sweet heaven, Neil!”
He laughed again.
The soft ring of it did nothing to ease the strain that filled the room, seeming to lurk in distantly visible, shimmering waves in every shadow-shaded corner.
One of his hands found the fluttery sleeve of her blouse, and his fingers took to wandering. Up, up, warm, sure, they traced streaks of lightning-lit anticipation through every bit of flesh they encountered.
“Neil…” The murmur of his name upon her lips was the catalyst. The one she sensed he’d waited for with as much controlled tension as she’d only moments ago waited, plotting her escape.
Once.
Then.
The last thing she wanted now was to get away.
Loneliness receded. So many years of loneliness. So many years of waiting. So many years of aching at every man’s glance, and his ultimate failure even to ask. Just like that, it was gone. In the stroking of lips against hair. In the spark-igniting trail of fingertips along anxious flesh.
Neil never released her. Turning her gently but firmly onto her back, he hesitated not at all in the process of raising himself over her and shifting his weight. Leaning forward, to press the lightning-thrill of his lips to her forehead.
His lips felt swollen. Burning brutal in the shivery gentleness of the pressure they exerted, they pulsed and beat.
Unbearably sensuous rhythms murmured from him into her. And then through her.
Far back in her throat, Sherry sighed. “Oh, Neil. Don’t…”
Stop.
She’d never had trouble speaking such a simple, straightforward word before. But the saying was difficult now. It was exceedingly difficult, when staggered and faltering lips couldn’t find the way to form words…any words. When her lungs no longer knew how to supply the breath needed to put words into audible action.
She needn’t have worried.
Neil didn’t.
Stop.
