Mariah’s eyelids flew open, the sudden brightness slicing through the haze of her hibernation like a knife. The sterile, metallic scent of the ship’s interior assaulted her senses, the air thick and clammy. She blinked rapidly, struggling to adjust to the dim lighting that flickered overhead, casting erratic shadows across the room.

Panic gripped her chest as she turned her head, her heart plummeting into her stomach. Stan and Dirk lay motionless in their capsules, their bodies marred by dark, charred marks that told a story of devastation. Her breath hitched, disbelief wrapping around her like a vice as she registered the faint, acrid smell that lingered in the air, mixing with the cold sterility of the ship.

“Stan! Dirk!” She called out, but her voice came out as a whisper, swallowed by the oppressive silence of the chamber.

No response. Just the dull hum of machinery echoing her solitude.

She shook her head, trying to clear the fog of confusion. This wasn’t real. It couldn’t be. She could feel the adrenaline flooding her veins, propelling her into action. With trembling fingers, she pulled herself up and reached for the control panel, her pulse racing as she pressed buttons, desperate to regain some semblance of order.

“Status report,” she commanded, though her voice trembled slightly. The screen lit up, numbers and data flashing before her eyes. Each line sent a fresh wave of dread crashing over her.

Systems malfunctioning. Crew casualties.

“Come on, come on…” Her fingertips danced across the console, searching for any sign of life, any indication that they hadn’t been abandoned here, lost in time and space. The reality of it all clawed at her gut, a gnawing fear that wrapped tighter around her heart with every passing second.

“Please!” she urged the silent machine, feeling the weight of responsibility pressing down on her shoulders. She had to know if anyone else survived. If there was still hope.

The screen flickered again, revealing a status update that left her reeling.
