Love can find you in the darkest of places.

Taylor knew he was putting himself in danger when he agreed to spy on his clan leader for the pack, but he had enough of the violence and the fear. The result? He’s stuck in a cell and getting regularly beaten, and he’s not sure the pack values him enough to send someone to save him.

Umberto doesn’t know Taylor well, but that won’t stop him from rescuing the guy. He hadn’t planned on getting stuck in that cell with Taylor, but he doesn’t mind taking care of the dragon shifter as they wait for the pack to help them escape.

Neither of them expected to fall in love in that cell, but they know that as long as Martin leads the clan, neither they nor the people they love will be safe.

Taylor had a little time before he had to start his rounds. He glanced around, but no one was paying him any attention. He took the opportunity to slip out on one of the balconies, carefully closing the door behind himself. He turned his back to it and took out his phone, found Luca’s number, and called the man.

Taylor expected Luca not to answer. He still couldn’t quite wrap his mind around the fact that the pack had welcomed Luca in, even though he was a dragon shifter. Taylor supposed that helping the pack during the mall attack had shown them that Luca was on their side.

Sometimes, Taylor wished he’d done the same. He might have if he hadn’t had to worry about his sister and his parents. Maybe that was an excuse, though. Luca had his son to think about, yet he’d rebelled anyway. Maybe Taylor’s problem was that he was scared of Martin.

Who wouldn’t be?

“Hey,” Luca said when he answered. “Everything okay?”

“We just had another meeting during dinner, if you can call Martin yelling for half an hour a meeting.”

“That can’t have been great. What’s he up to now?”

“The usual. He threatened all of us and your pack. He’s still angry that you managed to sneak in to get Thomas out. He’s been ranting about that every day.”

“What’s he planning?”

Taylor sucked in a breath and glanced behind himself. He lowered his voice, just in case. “He’s being very cagey. I think he suspects that you have a spy in our clan, and he doesn’t want information to leak.”

“You need to be careful.”

“I am.” Taylor knew that what he was doing was stupid and dangerous, but he couldn’t stand not doing anything and following Martin’s orders. He’d take every precaution he could, but he wouldn’t be surprised if Martin eventually found out what was going on. The man might be evil, but he was also smart and manipulative. He had minions who wouldn’t hesitate to run to him with any information they could find on the clan members, even those who weren’t betraying Martin.

“I’ll let you know as soon as I have more information, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. I’m not one of the people Martin trusts.” Taylor was nothing but a soldier, and he liked things that way. He didn’t want to get Martin’s attention.

That never ended well.

“Please,” Luca said. “And let me know if anything happens to you or your family. We can come and get you out.”

“Martin isn’t going to allow that to happen a second time.” Taylor had his chance to leave, but he hadn’t taken it. He couldn’t abandon his family, even though he knew they’d understand if he had. Everyone wanted out.

Luca’s parents had understood why Luca had grabbed Thomas and run. They’d been laying low since Luca had vanished during the mall attack. Taylor was pretty sure that Martin didn’t even remember who they were, and everyone was trying hard to keep things that way. They couldn’t sneak Luca’s parents out at the moment, but as soon as they could, the two would join Luca and his son in pack territory.

They just need to find the right moment to make it happen.

Taylor turned and opened the door to get back inside. “I need to get going if I don’t want to be late,” he told Luca.

He froze when he saw a man standing in the hallway, leaning against the wall in front of the door to the balcony. He slowly lowered his phone, not hanging up in case something bad was about to happen. Nothing good ever came out of getting the attention of one of Martin’s minions.
