Every dragon has his price, and sometimes, it’s more than he can afford to pay.

When Misha and Alcott had to leave their birth clan, they didn’t expect to find a new place to call home. They did, and Misha will do whatever he has to in order to never lose his place here.

But not Alcott.

Olsen has always felt on the outside looking in. As the only member of his family without psychic powers, he’s doing his best to help in the fight against the cockatrices, but it’s not enough.

He’s not enough.

Something’s wrong with Alcott, and Misha is glad to have Olsen’s support through whatever is happening. They both feel like they don’t quite belong, but maybe together, they can make it so they do.

If only Alcott weren’t spying on their clan for the enemy.

Someone came into the kitchen, and Olsen looked up. He smiled when he saw Misha, then frowned when he realized that Misha didn’t look happy. Had something happened? They hadn’t talked for long the other day, but Olsen had really enjoyed their conversation. They’d found common ground, which was a surprise since Misha was a dragon shifter. Olsen hadn’t expected it, but it made him like Misha even more.

That might be a problem, too.

“Oh, your boyfriend is here,” Roslin teased.

“He’s not my boyfriend,” Olsen said automatically. It was the truth. Misha wasn’t his boyfriend.

“You always stare at him when he’s nearby,” Donahue interjected. “You have a crush on him, don’t you?”

“It’s none of your business.”

“You’re our baby brother. Of course it’s our business.”

“Victor is younger than me, and he’s dating someone. Maybe you should go and bother his boyfriend.”

“We already know Tim is fine. We still gotta talk to your boyfriend, though.”

Olsen could only imagine the disaster that would be. He and Misha were barely even friends. He didn’t need his brothers to stick their big noses where they didn’t belong and send Misha running. “Leave him alone.”

“We just want to protect you.”

Olsen flipped Donahue the bird. “You don’t want to protect me. You want to be a dick, and I won’t let you bother him. He’s Elijah’s assistant, and he has enough to worry about without adding the two of you to the list.”

“I think anyone would be grateful to have us bothering them if it’s to protect you,” Roslin said.

“Or to have me bothering them, anyway,” Donahue added. “I’m better.”

They started bickering about which one of them was more important, and since Olsen didn’t care about their conclusion, he turned his attention back to Misha.

Misha didn’t look happy. He didn’t look quite unhappy, either, but it was clear that whatever was on his mind, it wasn’t an easy thing to deal with. Olsen remembered how Misha had talked about his brother and the way Alcott kept leaving the house even though he shouldn’t. When Misha or anyone else tried talking to him about it, he snapped and left, so no one knew where he was going or what was happening to him. Misha was worried, which in turn meant that Olsen was, too.
