Was the bomb meant for the Secretary of State or an attempt to get rid of an inconvenient Bolivian minister? Ethan and Ryan face the harsh reality of their jobs protecting Secretary Nolan in La Paz while Jazmin tries to stay alive in the company of a not-so-honest agent.

Marcus was back on his feet and pulled her up as if she weighed nothing. He turned away from the shooter, shielding her with his body. The last he saw was a second man coming to push aside a policeman trying to arrest the other. For a second, the extended barrel with silencer was in plain view. Marcus felt no more pain or exhaustion. Adrenaline kicked in and enhanced his reflexes.

“To my car!”

“No!” She was rigid in his hand, eyes wide in shock. “I won’t leave! I can’t!”

Marcus pulled harder, leaving her no chance to break free. To his right, a man suddenly jerked, stumbled backward, and sat on his butt as if pulled by an invisible string. His cry of pain was strangled as he put a hand on his right leg. Marcus gasped, then doubled his efforts to pull the woman out of the range of the shooter. She saw the man, too, and suddenly understood. He had an idea who was among the spectators, policemen, firemen, and press people. The idea proffered the image of the woman getting shot if she turned away.

“If they shoot me, they’ll try to shoot you, too! Come with me!”

“I’ve got nothing to do with you! I stay here!”

A woman a yard away to the left cried out in pain and went down. The mass of faceless people moved in sudden agitation. The whiff of panic was in the air. Guards along the former barrier pulled their guns without knowing the origin of the threat. The first frightened onlookers turned away and ran. Close to the first fire department van, three policemen moved simultaneously toward a single man in uniform. Marcus knew by the way the casual bystanders had been shot, there were at least three snipers in the crowd.

“Get in the fucking car!” Marcus screamed, pulling her to the black SUV that appeared the only real thing in the mayhem around them. She slipped and stumbled on bare feet, still trying to break loose. He saw pain and confusion on her face and couldn’t help it. Their enemies were ruthless enough to kill a throng of people to achieve their goal. “Get inside! Get inside the car, damn it! It’s bullet-proof!”

A bullet hit the upper edge of the glass, a sound like a large bug cracking against the windshield at a hundred miles per hour. The woman shrieked in terror and crouched. Marcus pushed the button to open the car and pulled her up.

“I said get inside! Damn it!”
