To solve a crime spree, two detective partners need to involve a beautiful veterinarian, and a flock of cats…and perhaps a touch of magic.

There are harmless street people being killed and left on the clean floors all over the city in strange places. The places are expensive private clubs of spas, mostly serving women. There are no traces or fingerprints. The only thing in common is that a stray cat is found at each location.

But just as the city’s best pair of detectives get involved, things get stranger. A very important executive commits suicide by shooting himself in the head—twice, and a cat is found waiting alone with the body.

Finally a reporter who’s covering a bombing and the veterinarian lady who’s having the cats isolated for the police are both kidnapped. Maybe it will take a touch of magic to get to the end of this puzzle.

First on scene, the patrol officer looked at the raggedy, dirty man with the strange broken neck as he lay dead on the immaculate floor. The cops were writing up the scene as an irritated owner was trying to get the entire police crew out of the Yoga For Heart franchise. It was obvious that the dead man didn’t belong at this location.

“He isn’t a member and isn’t related to any of our registered associates.” The manager was shifting from one foot to the other, watching money slide away as her clients were prevented from entering.

A CSI worker, dressed in light blue clean protection clothing, picked up a calico-colored cat and looked around. “Whose cat is this? We have to get it away from the crime scene.”

“It doesn’t belong in here. Probably came in with that bum,” the manager in her tight workout clothes commented.

A cop stepped forward. “I’ll call Animal Control.”

The CSI worker hesitated. “Make sure they keep it under quarantine. We’ll need to have the vet check it for trace evidence.” The guy covered in the blue paper booties handed over the very calm cat.

The cop smiled and cuddled the cat in his arms as he went out to find a car to make the call to get a pick up from animal rescue.

So began the investigation into another murder in this large city that would have more, maybe even tonight. Death was available among the poor and the rich.

Dr. Sarah Aggar had just finished the simple operation to neuter a beautiful Labrador Retriever that was someone’s pet. She was pleased that the owner was being responsible. They had a citywide announcement of a free pet neuter process at any of the city’s animal centers.

There was not much time in Sarah’s schedule for operations anymore since she was now in charge of the entire program for the city. She had her office at the main center that wasn’t in the center of the city. No one wanted a lot of animals in the downtown area, not with all the banks and high-end shopping.

The area where Sarah worked and the largest animal housing were located in the outer north district. There were two other centers. One was located on the west end, in what had turned into almost a slum area, and the other was in the south end near the river, but out in the suburbs with lots of room.

For reasons that Dr. Aggar didn’t question, the city council was still being very generous in the budget for her division. She decided it wouldn’t be good politics to starve poor animals, but it was okay to cut the pay for the police. She didn’t understand politics but was grateful that she could buy plenty of supplies.

What she was disappointed in—was that the adoption of animals had fallen off. With the economy dropping down and a lot of people out of work, or their wages being cut short, funds for an extra mouth in the house wasn’t on their list.

Still, she would give the orders to find room for strays and continue to encourage free procedures. Dr. Sarah Aggar knew she was a beautiful thirty-one-year-old woman who was married to a lot of mostly four-legged friends.

The expensive vans were kept out in the dark wet streets, saving the mistreated or feral animals and bringing them into the three housing facilities.

“Doctor, we got a call from the police. There’s another cat involved in a murder situation.” It was one of the many volunteers who approached her with the news.

Looking up as she was dumping her paper surgeon clothes, she asked, “Have the animal brought in here, and we’ll keep it isolated.”

“That means three cats in isolation because of crimes.” The volunteer commented as he turned to leave.

Going into her office, she pulled out a couple of folders. There was the information of two earlier cats that were now stored in the isolation section that had been at a murder scene. She turned to her multi-leaf note calendar on her desk and noted that there were an even six days between each cat retrieval. Even more interesting, the cats had been found at a crime scene in different yoga studios.

Frowning, she had to wonder what police section was handling these unusual crime scenes.

Pierce Connors walked into his office and looked around for anything that would protect him from the anger that he knew was coming from his two bosses. He went to his desk and picked up the folder containing the information for the locations where they had the betting systems set-up. They needed a front that was the perfect cover for the back door rooms that accepted large and even small wagers.

The fuckin’ cops had closed down most of the usual backroom places in the back of bars and the bookies at restaurants that were in rougher areas. Newspaper stands were now full of new people, as the old guys were suddenly behind bars, and street cops were everywhere. They were young cops, straight out of training and with stars in their eyes, and no way of getting into their pockets.
