Clay and Wyatt Feller are madly in love. Wyatt is a lieutenant sheriff, and Clay is a registered nurse. Wyatt is also a member of the National Guard. They have to face the fact that Wyatt is being deployed to the Middle East. He makes a Christmas Promise to Clay that he’ll be home by Christmas.

Clay and Wyatt Feller sat at an isolated table in Francios’ French Restaurant. Clay held Wyatt’s hand tightly. His eyes filled with tears. “I just don’t know how I’ll ever be able to deal with you leaving me.”

“Honey, I’m not leaving you because I want to. I’m being deployed with my unit. It’ll be my last deployment, just six months, I promise. I love you, Clay. Please don’t cry. You’ll get me started, too.”

“Wyatt, let’s go home. I need to hold you, kiss you, and make love to you.”

Wyatt paid the bill. He stood up and took Clay’s hand, and they walked out. They walked home without words. When they got back to their apartment, Wyatt unlocked the door and followed Clay in. Immediately, the two wrapped themselves in a passionate embrace. As they started to make their way to the bedroom, clothes came off. They were naked before they got into the bedroom. Wyatt picked up Clay and tossed him playfully on the bed. He leaped on top of him. Passions exploded.

The next morning, Clay made breakfast and helped Wyatt finish packing his duffle bag. “Clay, everything will be fine. I’ll be back before you have time to miss me.”

Clay’s chin hit his chest. He couldn’t stop the tears. “I miss you already.”

“Honey, we’ve got to get going.”

At the airport, Clay held tightly onto his husband, sobbing. “Please come back to me safe and sound. I know you’re a super cop here in Corter County, but you’re going to a place where killing American soldiers is considered a great badge of honor. Please, Wyatt, come back to me. I need you to grow old with me.”

Wyatt hugged him harder. “Honey, I've done this before and came back without so much as a scratch. So, baby, I promise to be home for Christmas. It’s a Christmas promise to be there. I expect lots of presents for me under the tree.”

Clay looked directly at Wyatt, then wrapped his hands around the back of his head and pulled him into a passionate kiss. An announcement suddenly interrupted them. Ladies and gentlemen, could I have your attention, please? Flight twelve fifty-one is ready for boarding. Will all military personnel please board at this time?

The announcement finished, and Clay quickly hugged Wyatt’s neck. “You promised. A Christmas promise, and I’m holding you to it. I love you so damn much,” he whispered in Wyatt’s ear.

“I love you, too. I’ve got to go. Please take care of yourself. Check on the people we love for me.” Wyatt checked in and immediately boarded.

Clay rushed to the window and watched as the plane pulled away from the gate and taxied toward the runway. He glimpsed Wyatt waving through the plane’s tiny window and waved frantically back. The plane continued to taxi down the runway. It picked up speed and then lifted off the ground. Clay cried as it took off and soared away. He placed his hands on the window and said to the plane taking off, “Please. Keep yourself safe, and remember I love you.”

Suddenly, a tiny hand took his hand. “It’s okay, Mister. God hears our prayers. My daddy will take good care of your friend because my daddy’s a general. He always brings his men safely home.”

Clay looked down and saw an adorable little girl. She looked like an angel as she gazed at him with sincere dark brown eyes and a precious little reassuring smile. He stroked her long black hair. He couldn’t help but smile. “You’re the most beautiful little girl. Thank you for making me feel better. You’re just an angel.”

“Angelica, you need to come back over here and not bother that man.” An elderly woman called to her. Angelica took Clay’s hand and led him to the lady. Clay saw that she was an extremely beautiful and well-dressed older lady. She smiled as they approached. “I’m so sorry, young man. My granddaughter has never met a stranger. It makes me slightly nervous, but that’s who she is.”

Clay smiled and reached out his hand. “Hello, I’m Clay Feller. My husband just took off with your son to the Middle East. This little angel has won my heart.”

The lovely lady stood. “Hello, my dear. I’m Michaeline Sawyer. And this baby girl is my granddaughter, Angelica Sawyer. My son, General Gabriel Sawyer, would be your husband’s commanding officer. Your husband is in very good hands. I promise you that.”

“I know now where little Angelica gets her beauty and her charms,” Clay said. He couldn’t help but smile at them.

Mrs. Sawyer picked up her belongings and helped her granddaughter with hers. “Clay Feller, would you like to join us for lunch? You shouldn’t be alone right now. There’s a very quaint little bistro here in the airport. The food and service are both wonderful.”

“I’d love that, Mrs. Sawyer. I’m feeling a little lost right now and very scared.”

“Oh, you dear man. So you know, we’re a fourth-generation military family. My grandfather, father, two brothers, husband, and all three of my sons served or are serving. That feeling starts when they’re deployed and ends when they come home. Please, dear, it’s Micky. I must warn you. We’ll be joining my other grandchildren. There are three more little monkeys. And all are boys. They’re sweet but very, very active boys.”

Angelica piped in, “They’re wild. Very wild.”

“I’d love to meet them. I’m afraid I was one of those monkeys a few years back.”

Micky took Clay’s arm and held Angelica’s hand. Off they went down through the concourse.

“Clay, what’s your young man’s name?” Micky asked.

“Here at home, he’s Lieutenant Sheriff Wyatt Sawyer. On that plane, he’s Colonel Wyatt Sawyer.”

Micky looked very seriously at him. “My son has spoken of your young man. He thinks he’s an excellent soldier and all-around wonderful man. Something to be proud of.”
