Earth, now a broken world, is hiding secrets that only the strong and brave can survive.

Atlantis Rey has achieved her goal of getting herself, her daughter, and the rest of the awakees safely back on earth, where they can roam freely if they choose. Now comes the hard part—securing their territory and scavenging the broken city for useful supplies.

But before she can truly get a sense of who or what surrounds them, a native group tries to ambush them in their ship. Descendants of the survivors of the first Vampire war, this ragtag group of men call themselves The Voodoo Boys.

Now that they know they’re not alone, Atlantis and the awakees continue to explore, but with far greater caution. They gradually discover other groups of survivors—some friendly, some definitely not. Worst is a post-apocalyptic cult whose leader serves the very beings that caused the world to be destroyed the first time.

Even though the broken world has dangers at every turn, Atlantis, Night, and Kilian still find time to become more and more in love with each other. Verruca, Ryo, Jax, and Sphinx have also fallen more deeply in love. Can love sustain them as the dangerously broken world tries to rip them apart?

Everyone had spread out, looking at the land around us. Night, Kilian, and I had made it to the front of the ship and were looking toward the harbor bridge. I pointed out all the structures I could see and tumbled into a long tangent of memories of what the bayfront had looked like before the bombs destroyed the world.

“Mom, that fire is still burning. I see black smoke rising from that direction,” Verruca yelled from somewhere on the ship’s other side.

“Chingoa.” I turned to the guys.

“Damn it,” Night said.

Kilian moved toward the direction of Verruca’s voice. Night and I followed behind him to see for ourselves. We were all standing behind the ship in just a few seconds, looking at plumes of black smoke rising. Several of the other awakees joined us.

“Atlantis, we must put that out, or it could burn all the land. Then it might not be usable to grow on,” Ronan said as he looked at me for agreement.

“Yes, we must. Let's get out that people-sized drone and grab fire extinguishers from the ship. Ronan and Ryo, take the drone and fly overhead to see what damage has already been caused. Night, Kilian, Jax, and I will go on foot.

“Verruca and Juniper, can y’all stay here and watch the rest of the awakees? Make sure they don’t try to wander off too far. We don’t know what’s out there. Cash can monitor the drone footage as they fly. Let us know if you see anything we need to worry about immediately.

“Everyone else will need to stand guard and help Verruca and Juniper with the rest of the group. Verruca, call the other agents and have them create a makeshift perimeter—spread out along the edge of the area you decide should be the boundary. The agents will need to keep the people from venturing too far. Camela and Gage, go through your idea for perimeter security with Verruca and Juniper. Pick some people to help gather the supplies needed, then get them started.”

The four of us headed off to see what we could do about that fire. I was sure we had crashed into a plant or refinery. What kind was anyone’s guess, since dense foliage covered it. There was flat ground for about the first mile, but then we had to climb a small hill. The hill had lots of overgrown vegetation, the grass very tall with vining plants weaving throughout.

“Son of a bitch,” Night yelled.

I turned to see Kilian running to where Night was hanging onto the edge of a hole. I ran over to them and kneeled to help.

“Give me a hand,” Kilian instructed as he reached for his right hand.

“Give me the other,” I said, grabbing it.

We pulled on Night until he could get a leg over the edge. Thank God he didn’t fall entirely down into this pit of darkness, because I couldn’t see past a few feet. I began pulling the vegetation back from around the hole and saw that there was a wood frame of some kind, maybe a window, I thought as I looked around the hole more.

“Okay, let's be a little more careful on the remaining ground. We don’t know what we’re climbing on. This hill seems to be a fallen building or house.”

“Obviously,” said Jax with a snort.

“Smart ass,” I retorted.

“But of course, Momma.” Jax grinned wide.

We returned to our trek across the last stretch of land. We ran into another building or hill. Luckily, it held steady as we crossed. In the last stretch, we ran into the outer portions of the manufacturing plant. It was like walking into a cavern created by foliage. The vegetation was dense and stretched high towards the sky. Little shafts of light broke through the foliage in random patterns but did nothing to light the darkened path we were walking. We had to turn on our communicators for light. Then Kilian reached into the bag he and Night had packed and pulled out a large flashlight—one of those old-school yellow square flashlights.

“Where did you get that?”

“Don’t be mad I came prepared, and you didn’t,” Kilian said with a grin.

“Look smart ass, I was just asking because I hadn’t seen them on the ship. I’m fine with my light thank you.”

The guys all started laughing. I turned sharply and continued forward. I had only taken a few steps when Kilian stepped up next to me and handed me a flashlight. I squinted one eye and glared up at him, then snatched the light from him. The others chuckled behind us, which finally made me crack a smile. I began sweeping the light beam from side to side to see what we were walking into. It was a strange mixture of metal and greenery intertwined to form a beautiful industrial urban forest. There were some actual trees, but most of the forest was created by large pipes rising from the ground and reaching toward the sky. Each was wrapped with vines, creating strange tree-like structures. It was as beautiful as it was odd, but all my years of watching TV shows that had odd and beautiful things blended had taught me that odd and beautiful meant you needed to be careful. We were going to have to cautiously pick our way through this place.

Climbing over what seemed like the hundredth pipe, I heard the drone overhead. We couldn’t see it, but then Ronan's voice came over our holos.

“We are here!”

“We hear you, but we can’t see you,” I called back.

“Same,” Ronan answered.

“Do you see any flames from up there?”

“No, just black smoke.”

“Okay, we don’t see anything either. Stay close to the smoke and I’ll let you know when we get there.”

“Copy.”
