Rupert Tanqueray’s life has gone horribly wrong. Perhaps if he can understand how it happened, he might be able to mend it.

Rupert and Robert, the Tanqueray twins, had always been inseparable until one day in October their maman, Célène, gave Rupert some difficult news. That was the beginning of a long and difficult time. A letter from old Aunt Zerenity disconcerted Rupert but gave him hope…though he feared it would come at the expense of his twin.  Happy endings come to those who are willing to wait. Rupert wasn’t exactly waiting for the beguiling May Gundarson to overcome her hesitation, but he got his blue skies ending all the same.

This story follows A Kiss in the Dark, Perfect Day, Isle of the Piper, Under the Stairs and The Holly on the Hill in the Tanqueray series.

In A Kiss in the Dark, Ancella Tanqueray, eldest child and only daughter of Tanqueray Manor, dances with her sweetheart at the New Year ball. By the final wish of the late Aunt Zerenity, the single dancers dance Kiss-in-the-Dark, leading Ancella and her best friend, Emelie Venables to a happy future—although not the one they originally intended! This story takes place mainly on New Year’s Eve, 1926.

Perfect Day takes up the story the following spring, but this time Horry, Ancella’s youngest brother, takes centre stage. A letter arrives for the Tanquerays from Aunt Zerenity’s first family requiring the return of the Trésor Talisman. No one has any idea what it is, including the Trésors.

On the same day, Horry learns that the now-married Ancella is expecting a secret. He meets the galleonfee maid Vigdis and they enjoy a perfect day before they part. Vigdis promises to deliver a letter to the Trésors. This story takes place on one perfect day in September, 1927.

Isle of the Piper sees Ancella and Horry sailing to Heather Isle in search of some information hinted at by a piper in Kiss in the Dark and brings solutions to two enduring mysteries. It takes place in the last days of spring, November, 1927.

Under the Stairs begins in 1926, just after the passing of Aunt Zerenity, and centres on Robert Tanqueray, the younger of the twins. He and his brother Rupert are estranged, and Robert has to find a new way to live. The action covers, loosely, ten months from October 1926 until August 1927, set within a framework story which happens in a single day in April 1929.

Apart from the first two chapters, The Holly on the Hill spans the sixteen months from September 1926 to Trinity Day—December 30th—1927. We revisit the New Year ball at Tanqueray Manor and follow Guy, the fourth-born Tanqueray, as he negotiates all the drama of 1927 and has some adventures of his own, culminating in the offer of a bright new future as the Keeper of the Isle…when the time comes.

In Blue Skies Rupert’s story is told, and we finally learn why he went to the Roches de Chaudron and how he became so isolated in his own family. Looking back over the difficult years on the eve of his twenty-sixth birthday, he is finally free to find his own blue skies.

The books of the Tanqueray series are set mostly in the 1920s and 30s, but all the action is over there in the fay homeland. Therefore, the characters accept their fay talents as natural. They are aware of our world but have little interest in it at this point in their history.
